The boars are selected on their individual performance data, genetic evaluations, and physical appraisals using Real-Time Ultrasound technology and the Herdsman® computer program. Intense visual evaluations and trait scoring help ensure that those animals shown to be genetically superior are also structurally sound and functional. Please remember that the boars that enter our stud were raised on the nucleus farm and have received no pampering or special treatment. They are grown in typical commercial conditions with 20 to 25 boars/pen. Some are on partially slatted floors with natural ventilation while others are on totally slatted floors with mechanical ventilation. Our boars experience the same seasonal stresses that are common to all swine production units.
When you open up the page for each individual boar you will see the following: the boar’s name, notch and registration will be on the top line, with his birth date on the following line. The 3rd line will be the boar’s sire, dam and her sire. The on farm performance is based on the Real-Time ultrasound figures and the Auskey % Lean. The traits are based on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being excellent, 4 is above average, 3 is average, 2 is below average, 1 is poor. The Herdsman across herd indexes are based on 13 herds that either produce our YxL gilts (1800 sows) or are using our YxL gilts (6000 sows).
